Once you have studied these files, create your own thesis for Paper 4. The instructions for Paper 4 include the TOPIC you are to write about, so please read the instructions before completing this homework assignment.
Be sure that your thesis has a topic + comment:
Either
Option A–Present your Position
Topic (Issue) + Comment (Your position + reasons/points to support your position)
OR
Option B–Refute the Opposition
Topic (Issue) + Comment (Counterpoints to refute opposition)
The difference in these two options is explained fully in the file Steps 1-3 Argument Exploration and Thesis. Preview the document
NOTE:I recommend that you use the exploration strategies discussed in the Steps 1-3 Argument Exploration file. These include:
creating a brainstorm grid of ideas that support both sides of the issue;
reviewing the grid and deciding your opinion on the issue;
reviewing the grid and deciding your approach (Option A or Option B);
reviewing the grid and selecting your best reasons;
writing the thesis as a TOPIC + COMMENT.
Example 1: Agree with Dickerson–Option A
Let’s say I agree with Darby Dickerson that campus concealed carry is not a good idea.After reviewing my exploration (See Steps 1-3 Argument ExplorationPreview the document), I decide I want to approach the issue by following Option A: Present my Position. My thesis for Paper 4 might look something like:
Darby Dickerson is correct; concealed campus carry is not a good idea because _________________, ___________________, and _______________.
In the blanks, I would put what I consider to be the reasons (how/why) guns should not be allowed on campus.
Example 2: Disagree with Dickerson–Option A
Or, let’s imagine that I disagree with Dickerson, but I still want to follow Option A: Present my Position.Then, after brainstorming reasons/ideas to support my opinion, I come up with a thesis that looks like so:
Although allowing guns on campus is a controversial issue, Darby Dickerson is incorrect in her assertion that such weapons will put students, faculty, and staff at risk. In fact, concealed campus carry is a good idea because ___________, _________, and _______________.
Example 3:Disagree with Dickerson–Option B
Another way to approach an argument is to refute the opposition, which is discussed fully in the file Steps 1-3 Argument Exploration and Thesis. To give you an idea of how a refutation thesis might be structured based on our topic, please see below.
Individuals such as Darby Dickerson who oppose guns on campus often mention that __________, ___________, and _________.However, these concerns are unfounded because _________, ___________, and _______________.
Of course, there are many, many options–I’m confident that with some brainstorming, you’ll come up with a GREAT thesis!
After you have written the thesis, write your outline (informal plan) for Paper 4, as illustrated in the files linked above.Depending on your approach, you can follow Option A or Option B, both of which are discussed in the files Step 4–Overview: Organization of an ArgumentPreview the document, Step 4a–Option A OrganizationPreview the document, and Step 4b–Option B OrganizationPreview the document.
