Collaborative Decision Making Through Shared Governance
The committee meeting is used in many organizations, including health care organization, to handle specific business functions. Through committee meetings, members can deliberate on specific issues and help in making suitable decisions (Issenberg et al., 2011). Committees in healthcare organizations are useful in ensuring collaborative decision-making process, which is attained through shared governance.
Recently, I attended a committee meeting in the healthcare organization, where I work, with the aim of observing several things about the committee members. Having studies about the importance of committee meeting in the running of healthcare organization, I wanted to gain fast hand experience of the meeting. I was interest in the interactions of the committee members and their process that it uses when forming decisions.
Function of Committee
The committee has many functions relating organizational management, assessing financial performance, planning, delegating work and making decisions on various matters. It is the function of the committee to evaluate and review the progress of specific department in line with the realization of organizational goals. The committee focuses on identifying areas that require improvement or adjustments so as to improve the rate at which the healthcare organization meets its aims.
The committee has the function of assessing the financial performance of the organization. During the meeting, the committee discusses how various departments have spent the resources allocated to them so as to ascertain whether those resources are utilized effectively. Additionally, the committee also assesses the monthly cost and revenue of the organization to ascertain the financial performance.
Another function of the committee in my healthcare organization relates to delegation of work. The committee identifies various management tasks that require being managed by junior employees. The employees with the right skills and experience are proposed to undertake those tasks.
The committee has the function of planning for the future and the next general meeting. The committee focuses on identifying new opportunities in healthcare and come up with proposals relating to the project that the organization needs to undertake. The aim of planning about the future is to help the organization attain the competitive advantage over the other healthcare organizations in the country (Issenberg et al., 2011). The committee also plans the annual general meeting, including the time and venue.
The committee has the function of making a decision on different matters. It decides on governance and management processes and systems in the organization. It makes a decision on the most applicable methods of financing various projects. Additionally, it decides on applicable recruitment requirements, work terms and conditions in the organization.
Roles of Those in Attendance
The main role of those in attendance in committee meeting relates to offering views opinions and suggestion on various issues. The committee members were required to contribute on various matters being discussed. The committee had the leaders, who included the chairman, secretary, and treasurer, who ensure that the meeting is running effectively. Everything discussed in the meeting is recorded in writing for future use.
Interactions Between Members of the Committee
The members of the committee interacted openly where all individuals were free to express themselves. The members listened to each other by allowing every member to speak without the interruption. This gave the members a chance to hear others and to be heard by others.
Since all members were given chances to air their opinion, grievances, and recommendations; therefore, the committee uses shared governance when making decisions. All committee members were involved in discussion process before the decisions were realized. Additionally, the form of arriving at decisions relates to shared governance because opinions, views, and suggestions from all committee members were put into consideration during the decision-making process.
