ABSTRACT:
What might be the purpose of this volatile? Is it harmful,or helpful to the garlic,or to the other plan? Does it affect all the groups in the same way? Based on the hypothesis on the results section we can say that there’s a big effect of the volatiles.The separation of this experiment consist in three different groups that makes it clear and easier to expand our investigation . Also proved that affects and harmed that is for other the plan in its development.
INTRODUCTION:
The area of research that focuses on chemical effects of plans upon each other is called allelopathy. Allelopathy is defined as “any direct or indirect harmful or beneficial effect of one plant…. On another through production of chemical compounds the escape into the environment”(Rice,1984). Gallic(Allium sativum) is one the famous example of allelopathy.Long famous as folk remedy(to ward off vampires),more recently(reviewed by Blumenthal and Gardner et al,in 2000) it has also been investigated for possible medicinal effects.As anyone who cooks with it will tell you, when crushed its cloves release astong characteristic smell. The smell is produced by a volatile,a chemical the evaporates into the air. When it diffuses to your nose,you smell the garlic.
MATERIALS:
1. Experimental seeds -Garlic and non-allium plant lettuce(Lactuca sativa).
2. Seed Germination setup ((3) 9 cm Petri dish with two pieces each of Whatman filter paper).
3. Distilled water (25 ml per set up)
4. Masking tape
5. Tinfoil or 35 x 10 Falcon tissue culture dishes
6. 2 Garlics
one press & one whole
7. Triple beam balance
METHOD:
Take the Petri dish with two pieces each of Whatman filter paper and create three different groups (control group,experimental group,and non-control-non-experimental).Weigh 1.0 g sample on a triple beam balance of the plant material,crush it hand press(both garlic and controls) and transfer the material sample to a tinfoil boat . place the crushed plant material in one of Petri dish and 20 lettuce seeds. Add 25 ml of water ,seal the dish with masking tape, incubate for seven days under the classroom conditions (This process corresponds to a control group). Note that test seeds in contact with only the volatiles .For the experimental group replace the crush garlic for a whole garlic teeth skip the weighting step,follow the same process. And the last group place 20 lettuce seeds one of Petri dish, add 25 ml of water ,seal the dish with masking tape, incubate for seven days under the classroom conditions .
