INT. DRISKILL APARTMENT – MORNING
Am busy on the computer playing a football game. Mum is busy washing the utensils.
MUM
Taylor. (My mum calls out my name)
I ignore her call, pretending I wasn’t hearing,
MUM
Taylor! (Changing her tone). Can’t you hear my calls?
ME
(Pretending to be surprised, yet not drawing my attention from the computer)
Oh! Mum, I am sorry I didn’t hear you call. What is up? You haven’t finished cleaning the utensils yet?
MUM
(Sighs sarcastically) How is that your business? When will you do your laundry? It is almost midday and you haven’t even started. I have severally warned you about addiction to those computer games, soon you will become an addict, just like most of your age mates in the neighborhood.
(Am carried away by the computer game that I did not hear what she said)
ME
(Reacting to a goal in the computer game)Gooaaal!!! Yees. I knew I would win this one.
MUM
(Angrily) Taylor, you aren’t even paying attention to what am saying.
ME
(Surprised). Oh! Mum what did you just say?
(Now concentrating)
MUM
(Pointing at me) If you just happen to play another game on that computer before you do your cleaning, I will crash it right away. Move out of there immediately.
(She angrily advances towards me. I immediately run to my room to do the cleaning)
INT. LOCAL GAMES STORE – EVENING
We are on our way home after a tiresome day in school. We pass in front of the games store just when someone is playing my favorite game, football. My attention, as well as my friend’s, is caught by the magical moment when someone is about to score a goal.
JOHN
Look, he almost scored that one. I wonder how he missed it. It is not common for me to miss such.
KEN
(Interrupting) Hey, I almost cheered! That was a big moment, a big miss.
TOM
(Calming everyone down). Look, I have a suggestion. Why don’t we do one or two games in here (Pointing to the store), after all, it is not that late. We can still be home in good time.
(All the others nod in agreement)
ME
(Realizing I have no money to pay for a game)
Look here guys, (all turn attention to me), but I don’t have money to pay for a game myself. My parents don’t allow me money to school you know.
(All stare at each other)
ME (CONT’D)
But we are still good friends, maybe Tom or Ken, you can pay up for me, maybe a game or two. It isn’t too expensive. (Noting the change in facial expression, I lower my voice)
ME (CONT’D)
At least if you are able to.
CLINTON
(Speaking as if to explain something to me)Look here buddy, we have enough only for ourselves, nothing more for any visitor. So, if you don’t have any money, kindly find your way home. We will catch up with you later.
TOM
Yes. We can’t help you. Try to be kind to your parents next time, they may probably consider giving you pocket money to school. As for us, we have only what is sufficient for us.
KEN
(Addressing Tom and Clinton)
Hey, we are wasting too much time on him. Let us get going, we may get late. Goodbye Taylor, see you tomorrow. (They all wave goodbye and enter the games store. Am left there feeling embarrassed and hurt. I decide to go home)

INT. DRISKILL APARTMENT – SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Am at home very bored. There is nobody around and nothing is interesting on the TV. Am thinking about the day’s occurrences. Suddenly, I react as if I have remembered something and rush to my parent’s bedroom. I search the drawers and find some money that is safely kept there. I take enough to pay for several games at the store and I quickly leave the house for the games store.
INT. LOCAL GAMES STORE
I arrive to find Clinton and Ken already there.
ME
(Addressing them joyfully)
Hey buddies, what have you been up to? I never thought I will find you here.
CLINTON
Yah, we just gotten here a little bit earlier. We didn’t also expect to see you here. Did a miracle happen to your parents or something?
ME
(Feeling agitated) It does not concern you where I got the money.
(I Sit down and start a game. It is the most updated game with the best graphics I have ever played. I enjoy the bit of the afternoon until my money is finished. Tom and Clinton are still playing)
(Addressing them) Hey guys, got to go. I have something to do for the evening. I will see you later.
KEN
Are you sure it is not money problem?
(I choose not to respond and calmly leave the store)
(Something comes in my mind ‘I should have stolen more’)
INT. DRISKILL APARTMENTS – AFTERNOON
Another boring Saturday afternoon. My two sisters are at home. We are all staring at the screen. There is nothing interesting though. Although I have no money, I miss the games’ store. The thoughts of stealing once more are suppressed by the fear of being caught by my sisters.
CLARA
There is nothing good about this show. Can you try another program?
ME
(Interrupting). There is nothing good about Saturday afternoon shows. I have witnessed so severally.
CYNTHIA
Really? Clara, we can take a rest then. There is nothing much left for us, after all I feel tired.
(My face brightens at the mention of the idea. A golden opportunity to steal once more has presented itself. I couldn’t hope for more from Clara)
CLARA
Yah, I agree. (Am almost cheering). Hey, (addressing me). Going anywhere this afternoon?
ME
(As if stammering) eeheeh, ummmh, am not sure. Why?
CYNTHIA
Why are you acting so? Every time you have acted so in the past, you were always up to something cheeky. But anyway, I leave.
(She drops down the remote and leaves the table room. Clara follows right behind her.)
I know my opportune time has come. Checking the clock, I realize time is much gone and I need to act fast. I tiptoe towards my parent’s bedroom and open the door as silently as I can. My sisters’ bedroom isn’t far, so I avoid drawing their attention. I manage to do it without causing a disturbance. Immediately am in, I start opening and closing the drawers. It seems as if my parents have carried all money to work. Just then I realize the coat hanged in the wardrobe. My dad had worn it the previous day, it could contain something. It surely yields results but just when I have pulled the notes from the pocket, I notice someone has been observing me all along. My sister Cynthia. She had predicted I was up to something cheeky. Unfortunately, I left the door open, which drew her attention while on her way to the kitchen to check for food)
CYNTHIA
So, this is what you were up to. I knew it from the beginning. When did you start stealing?
ME
(Still in shock)
No, I haven’t done it any other time. This is my first time.
CYNTHIA
What do you need money for? This must be reported immediately to mum and dad as soon as they report from work.
(Rushing up to her and in a pleading with her)
ME
You know if you do that, I will be skinned alive. I just needed some little amount of money for a computer game at the cyber. Just little. I promise I won’t repeat this conduct again. I swear!! Please forgive me, Please, please! (Almost in tears)

CYNTHIA
(In an authoritative voice) Let it be really the last time it happens. In case I find you again, I will report it immediately. I hope you understand how it will turn out to be.
(Smiles in appreciation, I return the money and leaves the room immediately)
INT. DRISKILL APARTMENTS – EVENING
Another Saturday. The same boredom has overtaken the house. There is no one around. My parents are out on a business trip. We are not aware if they will be back today or tomorrow. My sisters are out catching up with their friends. Similar thoughts for a stealing expedition come to me. I cannot tolerate the boredom. I have to go out and play. This time I manage to enter the bedroom and steal a considerable amount to pay for several games.
INT. LOCAL GAMES CYBER– EVENING
I arrive late though there is still enough time before the cyber is closed. This particular day, Ken and Tom are broke. They have spent the whole day playing games and have up all their money
KEN
Hey buddy, why this late? The cyber is almost closing and we are almost leaving.
ME
I was busy the whole day. I had much laundry for myself. I have just finished with the cleaning. There are still some hours to the final closure. We can still hang around guys.
TOM
Unfortunately, we haven’t any extra money left. We have been here since morning. We would rather leave.
ME
(Urging them) No… No! I will pay for your expenses from now on till the time we leave here. Today, I managed to convince my parents to pay up for me several rounds, and they agreed. I can pay also for you.
TOM
(Joyfully) Oh. That is wonderful. We wouldn’t mind playing more games.
KEN
(With doubts) Ken are you sure this guy will pay. He could be out to revenge for the several times we have pissed him off. Let us just leave.
ME
(Convincingly). Hey see, I will even make the payment advance. Today am the rich guy, I will cater for your snacks too.
(Nodding their heads in agreement)
Both Ken and Tom take back their seats and we keep on playing computer games. We fail to realize when night falls. Finally, the cyber attendant signals that time is over and he needs to close the cyber. We all log out, I make the final payment for all sessions and we all leave. Stepping outside the door, all of us are amazed
TOM
Look, it is already dark outside. It must be really late
ME
(Carried away by thoughts of the situation in case I find my parents back at home)
KEN
Hey, Taylor. What are you thinking about? We need to get going.
We all hurriedly make our way home
INT. DRISKILL APARTMENTS – EVENING
I arrive home only to find my parents have come back from the business trip.

MUM
Taylor, where have you been?
ME
At the games cyber mum. I went with Tom and Ken, our neighbors.
DAD
So you are the one who stole the money in the drawer.
(There is a deep silence in the room as everyone awaits my response)
DAD
Will you speak or may I help?
(Noticing the sarcasm in the voice…)
ME
Ye… ye…. Yes. I am the one. But I only took some little for a computer game at the cyber.
What follows is a thorough beating from my father, as both mum and my sister’s watch in disbelief.
DAD
This must never happen again. Tomorrow you will spend the entire morning outside the apartments naked, with a tag describing the kind of thief you are.
EXT. OUTSIDE DRISKILL APARTMENTS
Neighbors pass by in amazement as they see me naked outside the apartment. The tag reads ‘I am a young thief who steals money for computer games’. Most of my friends from school make fun of me, including Tom and Ken, who now understand I had stolen the money I used to pay for their cyber games.
