Is God a male or female? Of course, the answer to this question is that God is a Spirit. The question then is are their male or female spirits? Again, the answer is no! Spirit is spirit with the capacity to exhibit both male and female characteristics. God made animals, man inclusive, to have gender characteristics for the purpose of procreation in the earth. Genesis 1: 26 – 27, records how God created the human spirit. “And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them” So from these verses of scriptures we can see that human being in its spirit form is neither male nor female per se, but a spirit that can manifest male and female characteristics only when infused into a physical body.
God introduced the gender features when He formed Adam from the dust of the earth and later Eve, from Adam’s rib. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul: and the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man” Genesis 2: 7, 21 – 22.
Remember the man God created in Genesis chapter one is a spirit. It is this spirit that was created in the image and likeness of God. And for that spirit to be able to function in the earth, God gave it a physical or human body. That is Adam and Eve. That goes to show that God is neither male nor female. He is God and God of all spirits and flesh.
The question that is likely to spring up in one’s mind at this point is why God is then predominantly represented as male? A number of reasons can be an advance for this. The fact that most of the writers of the books that made up the Bible are males could be a factor. Naturally, when a male or female writes, he or she perceives, argues or get influenced by their gender. They see things from the perspective of their gender. Since most of the writers of the books of the Bible are males, their opinions, idea, and perception of God would definitely be colored by their male gender.
Another factor is the culture of those who wrote the books of the Bible. Most cultures of the earth even from ancient times tend to portray male dominance. The female gender is generally accepted as the weaker sex. In fact, in ancient times, only scanty cultures allow women to go to war. It is only males that defend their communities and play other leading roles. With this orientation, God who is the chief protector and defender is also portrayed as a male.
Another school of thought would argue that since Adam was formed first, he is the one that actually carries the true nature or characteristics of God. They would further argue that Eve, only came into the picture after God could not find a suitable or helpmate for Adam among the animals. Had any animal met the criteria, Eve would not have been formed from Adam’s rib.
I would like to refer you to Genesis 1: 26 – 27 again. Carefully read and observe the words and tenses used. “And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” Did you notice the underlined words, ‘them’? They refer to the human spirit as of both male and female. The human spirit that God created has both male and female features. That is why God did not have to create or form Eve from the dust of the ground, but from the rib, He took from Adam. In other words, God separated the female characteristics from Adam so that he could have a suitable mate.
Several other scriptures show us that feminine part of God. In Isaiah 66: 13, we see God playing the role of a mother. “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” This means that God is a mother that comforts us whenever we are in difficulty.
Furthermore, Isaiah 49: 15 shows us that God is compassionate even more than a nursing mother. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” In other words, no matter how dicey a situation might be, we can be rest assured God will not forget us the way a nursing mother will not forget her baby at her breast.
Isaiah 42: 14 again lets us know that God can be in anguish like a woman in labor over an unrepentant and obdurate soul. “For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant.” God is not happy when any of His children stray. This is why He sends His Word and preachers as reconciliation ministers to help the strayed soul retract. In Luke 15: 8 – 10, God’s attitude towards a repented sinner is compared to a woman’s attitude when she finds her missing coin. “Or what woman having ten silver coins, is she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Know that God gave birth to us, male and female through His Word. “He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession” James 1: 18. This is just the same way a woman would give birth to children.
So refuse to see yourself with less value as a woman. You are His prized possession. He created you in His image and likeness. You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar breed created to show forth the praises of God. Therefore, realize that you are unique as a woman. God in His infinite wisdom and pleasure made you a woman to fulfill His divine purpose. Again, refusing to see yourself of less worth to the male gender. It is the same way a man would receive the salvation that a woman also receives. Both male and female have the same Holy Spirit and His gifts. Just the same way a male can lay hands on the sick to recover, the same way a female can also heal the sick. So can you see that you are special?
