Gender Stereotypes
Gender stereotypes are basically ideas that have been culturally ingrained in the society regarding how males and females are supposed to behave. For example, it is stereotyped that men should not cry as it is a sign of weakness while women are supposed to be submissive and should obey whatever their husbands tell them. What is more, some careers, such as engineering are known to be dominated by men while women are made to believe that they can only excel in languages ((Herring, S. & Kapidzik, S. 2015, 6). The social media, including platforms, such as Instagram play a big role in promoting various gender stereotypes in the society today. Children and young adults often emulate the pictures that men and women often post on the Instagram since they believe that it is supposed to be that way.
Nevertheless, technologies like Instagram, can be used to challenge the gender stereotypes through various ways. To start with, women who have become successful in male-dominated careers should often post their pictures so that the young girls can see that it is possible for them also to do what men can do. On the other hand, men who take women-dominate careers should not shy off from posting their pictures while at work as this will signal to other young men that there is no such a thing as ‘women or men careers.”
Another way in which Instagram and other social media platforms can come in hand to fight against gender stereotypes is by speaking out and condemning them without fear. The world has become technological and a lot of communication is happening in the social media platforms, such as Instagram (Herring, S. & Kapidzik, S. 2015, 2). Posting messages that advocates for gender equality, disregarding male dominance, and urging women to rise up and stop depending on their husbands, among other stereotyping can mobilize many people who then start believing that gender stereotyping is wrong.
