Gendered Self
The social construction of gender is not a new concept but has been there throughout the history of the earth. It is a model that is encompassed in the field of sociology and is based on the perception that the differences and operations in gender are a construct of society. The social construction of gender emanates from social constructivism theory which suggests that the reality that people conceive is socially situated (Kukla, 2013). Based on this view, gender roles are formed which are considered appropriate for members of the different sexes to practice or exhibit. This paper explains my gendered self as a woman and how it impacts my daily life.
At the heart of social construction of gender is the gender roles. These are the ideal behavioral expectation that society deems fit for men and women. In other words, they are the societal expectations on how the two genders should act, dress, speak, and present themselves, among other features. These gender roles are taught at a young age at school, making people to strongly believe and behave according to those expectations. In prior occasions, ladies were abused through each potential methods by the general public. They endured a great deal of analysis, needed opportunity and stood no place alongside men (Kukla, 2013). They were even denied the essential claims of a person. It required a ton of exertion and fortitude for them to stamp an impression of “ladies power” and make a critical spot in the public eye.
One of the most popular societal construction of gender role is that of the personality traits. The society expects women to be weak both physically and emotionally unlike their gender counterparts, the men (Lindsey, 2015). What this means is that it is perceived normal for women to, for instance, cry when they are sad or angry, should seek protection from men, should act gracefully and with compassion, just to mention a few traits. As a result, many women tend to behave according to the set expectations. They do so to fit in the society as deviating from the constructed roles is considered as being defiant. Women who tend to exhibit personalize such as being less emotional, physically aggressiveness, or even strength are sometimes considered not fitting in society.
On the other hand, society expects men to be strong, aggressive, confident, and commanding, among other characteristics. Additionally, men are assumed to be the protectors of women and society at large (Lindsey, 2015). As a result, boys and young men tend to showcase strength, self-assuredness, and almost all males tend to be protective of the females around them since the society has molded them into believing that women are weak beings who need protection from men. Just as women who are highly confident or aggressive are seen as deviant, men who seem weak or lack confidence are said to be acting inappropriately.
Another example which is largely a social construct of gender is domestic responsibilities. Over the years, women have been nurtured to believe that they should take care of the children, and handle domestic work such as cleaning and cooking (Lindsey, 2015). To fit in, many women are dedicated to looking after their children and handling domestic chores. Nevertheless, there seems to be an alteration in this gender role in modern society. Men have changed their view about this role and have become highly supportive, assisting their wives in child-rearing and cooking, among other domestic chores. However, it is still widely held that domestic work is the responsibility of a woman.
We are all familiar with the phrase “what a man can do, a woman can do”. Today’s world has changed to a culture where women demand to be treated the same as men. Gender equality and women empowerment is a highly debated issue in the U.S and globally (Lindsey, 2015). Besides, it is a visible change which has happened over time even though some people are highly opposed to it. Individuals who do not advocate for gender equity and empowering women argue that women should stay at home and handle domestic work. On the other hand, the supporters of gender equality and empowerment claim that it is important for women to be treated equally as men since are also capable of improving the society we live in. For the past few decades, women have proven that they can positively impact the society just as men. As such, it is vital to reinforce the importance of gender equality and women empowerment, especially to the people who are against it.
Some people claim that many women have neglected their home responsibilities since they work full time, which is a consequence of gender equity and women empowerment. This is true as women are now enlightened and do not want to stay at home. Instead, they employ nannies to handle most of the home chores (Oakley, 2016). Besides, it is difficult for many women to balance between work and home. Even though women become independent when they work, gender equality and women empowerment is responsible, to a large extent for the way women have forgotten their roles in society.
Gender equality and women empowerment is not new. For decades, women have always fought for equal rights with men such as the entitlement to receive equal opportunities in education and employment, just to mention a few. Some historical events and movements in the 17th and 18th centuries played a significant role in increasing awareness of the importance of gender equity and empowerment (Oakley, 2016). Real changes in the way girls and females and women were treated were more visible as of the early 19th century. For instance, most men allowed their women to work outside home and girls were allowed to go to school just as boys, among other changes. As such, one of the positive effects of gender equity and women empowerment is that women are more educated and as a result, society has become more civilized. However, gender inequalities are still visible. For example, research shows that women are paid smaller salaries than men in the same level jobs in most companies. Moreover, some positions such as engineering jobs are often set aside for men. To ensure that absolute gender equality is observed, governments should come up with robust gender equality and women programs.
Women should be treated equally as men and should be empowered as they are highly capable of changing society in positive ways just like men. For instance, when a woman is educated and gets employed, she can impact her family by assisting her partner to provide. In other words, a woman who is offered the chance to acquire education and works improve the financial status of her family (Kukla, 2013). This emphasizes the importance of gender quality and women empowerment. Ladies’ cooperation in the standard political movement has significant ramifications for the more extensive field of administration in any nation. Administration identifies with a lot of principles, establishments, and qualities that are engaged with the administration of state and society. Administration establishments and procedures incorporate ideological groups, parliaments, government and their collaborations with society. In spite of the fact that administration is a conventional term which could mean great government or the executives, the administration esteems, sorts of government, the nature of political procedures, the ideological groups and associations, which or whose interests are spoken to and secured, and the degree of intensity that the majority need to challenge the state or in proposing options in techniques for administration.
It is to a great extent held that ladies everywhere throughout the world have been made to endure separation and hardship of different sorts since the get-go that they have from the start been denied even such essential rights as access to education and property. This worldwide concern has relentlessly become through the previous couple of decades and has brought about endeavors to carry ladies into the standard of life, for the most part through financial exercises went for engaging them and consequently reestablishing fairness between the genders. Genuine strengthening of ladies, be that as it may, lies in helping them unfurl the profound part of their character, develop their character and show their virtue and parenthood. It is these that make up the character of the perfect Indian lady; procuring limit and open status are optional (Oakley, 2016). All ladies are portions of a similar endless heavenly Power, and subsequently divine. Completely understanding the significance and desperation of the progress of ladies, on the off chance that we are to spare our social conventions and otherworldly qualities and counter the negative patterns that are currently influencing our body politic.
