Impact of Information Technology on IT
University education is one of the areas that have been heavily impacted by information technology. Information and technology (IT) involve the use of computers to store, retrieve, or share information. With the technological advancements, a large number of students have access to computers which help them to do their assignments and research work.  Technology has also enabled lecturers to adopt different ways to share information with learners through, for instance, the use of smart boards (Brabazon, 2016). Online learning is one of the most significant impacts that information technology has had on higher education.  It has also caused a wide range of undesirable effects on university education. For instance, students’ ability to be creative has been hindered as they can easily get the information they are looking for online. The paper will contain a discussion of the positive and negative effects of information technology on university education as well as a synthesis of negative and positive impacts.
Positive effects
To start with, information technology has facilitated the creation of online learning. It empowers learners to get the hang of utilizing any gadget associated with the Internet. With web-based learning, there is no compelling reason to spend a great deal of cash leasing a building, paying a costly power charge, web association and running water so you can get your understudies physically there to take courses. What’s more, significantly less cash spent on transportation. Likewise, web-based learning takes into account self-managed learning as in understudies or students can take their courses whenever and in any place. Utilizing their very own gadgets, understudies who don’t possess energy for customary classes can learn online at whatever point they do have time (Brabazon, 2016). What is more, web-based realizing devours less time as there is no compelling reason to invest energy driving to and from the classroom, for both the instructor and the understudies. Additionally, the instructor or mentor does not have to give a similar class again and again to an alternate gathering of understudies. Lecturers just need to set up the content once, and afterward, share it diverse gatherings of students not really in the meantime.
Another advantage associated with information technology in the context of university education is that students can easily access information and more so, facts.  In the event that a school’s library is obsolete or ailing in a determination of titles, an understudy may think that it is hard to gather the essential research for an exposition or research paper. For whatever length of time that the school has a PC lab, students can utilize the web and advanced reference books to acquire the examination they require (Brabazon, 2016). While understudies ought to be careful about the authenticity of a portion of the substance they read on the web, numerous schools use programming like the Encyclopedia Britannica to enable understudies to do look into.
Data innovation likewise offers instructors the chance to change the manner in which learning occurs, and empower learners’ development. For example, ICT is associated with a scope of apparatuses that instructors or speakers use to present and show as a major aspect of their educating and help teachers connect with students as well as engage them in an increasingly significant manner. These mechanical apparatuses can be intentionally intended for instruction, for instance, programming or equipment utilized in the setting, for example, word processors and spreadsheets. PC apparatuses encourage students and instructors to control complex informational collections (Brabazon, 2016). This at that point gives the setting to a viable dialog that assists to create subject comprehension. ICT is gainful for educators to share assets, mastery, and guidance. It is likewise less demanding to design and plan exercises and structure materials for understudies. Here and there, ICT encourages educators to access modern understudies and school information, whenever anyplace. Educators can improve their expert picture by utilizing ICT.
Students also learn and participate in web seminars which increases their knowledge. Few out of every odd school has the assets and spending plan to send its understudies on field trips identified with the course of study. At the point when this is the situation, the students’ training can endure. In any case, because of innovation, understudies can utilize the web for all intents and purposes go to web workshops (“webinars”) put on by historical centers and other instructive foundations (Brabazon, 2016). NASA, for example, offers a program that enables understudies to converse with space travelers in space.
Negative effects
One of the negative implications of IT is that it destroys the teacher-student relationship by preventing face-to-face interaction. Due to the increased students’ reliability on the Internet, students may opt to miss classes since they can find almost any content related to their academics online. Also, when students do not understand something taught in class, they may choose to use the Internet instead of seeking direct help from their lecturer. In addition, while e-learning can be very intuitive nowadays, using video meetings, online classes, and eye to eye video visit, despite everything it isn’t equivalent to sitting over the room from a genuine individual. Basically, there is not a viable alternative for communicating with, and gaining from, a kindred human. Also, in e-learning, when a program is produced, it depends on what the course designers believe is the correct educational modules at the time. Nevertheless, learning materials can rapidly end up obsolete and may contain blunders even from the earliest starting point (Passey & Samways, 2016). The best coaches will sit and converse with individuals and draw in with them to discover what they have to know, and how they have to learn it. Understudy input is exceedingly important, in any case, that is far less conceivable with an e-adapting course. Talented coaches and topic specialists are getting it done when they are being flame broiled by – and communicating with – their understudies. This communication results in a superior preparing procedure and better coaches. In e-learning, it’s generally not present.
Another major drawback of information technology on the university is that it has undermined the students’ ability to become creative. The availability of information over the Internet has made lecturers lazy in the sense that they often ask students to handle and submit their work online (Passey & Samways, 2016). As a result, teachers have little time to assess their students’ originality face-to-face. Learners have also played a significant role in damaging their creativeness as they often find it easy to copy assignments rather than doing comprehensive research. The advancement in the field of IT is highly associated with plagiarism and cheating of exams among students which is an indicator of lack of creativity.
In addition, IT has negatively affected the academic achievement of most students in the University. Technological advancement has made it easier for learners to access electronic devices such as smartphones (Passey & Samways, 2016). Besides, the modern educational system does not restrict learners from operating their gadgets. In fact, many institutions of higher learning have installed WI-FI in the classrooms. As such, the rate of distraction is often high. Instead of the learners’ concentrating on what the instructor is teaching, some tend to be on social media platforms such as Facebook, and Twitter, just to mention a few. Consequently, students may end up grasping little or no content at all. The direct consequence of this is a failure in exams or rather low academic achievement.
Overall, Information is responsible for a wide range of positive and negative effects on University education. Technological advancements have made it easier for students to access any information they require on the Internet for academic purposes, Moreover, online learning which a product of IT offers a convenient learning environment for learners. Educators have also found new ways to teach in classrooms such as the use of smart boards which make their work easier. One of the most significant disadvantages of IT on university education is that it has destroyed the relationship between students and lecturers as many learners may opt to miss classes because they are guaranteed that they can read online. Reduced creativity due to the increased reliability of online information is also a major negative impact of IT on university education. In my view, IT has largely impacted university education in a positive manner than it has negatively affected it. In other words, the benefits of IT on university educations weigh its disadvantages. As such I would argue that IT has done more good than harm on higher learning education.
