- A maximum of 3000 words. You may use tables and diagrams which will not be included in the word count.

- Students are required to submit their coursework through JIRA. Only assessments submitted through JIRA will be marked. Any other submission including submission to your study centre in hard copy will be treated as a non-submission.

The assignment will be graded for individuals on the basis of the specific criteria outlined in the Generic Assessment Criteria (Undergraduate) on the following page.
The “Presentation” element of the Generic Assessment Criteria (Undergraduate) will also be used (additional to the above assignment guidance notes) to assess the report structure.
The Talbots Tooling Company (TTC) was set up in the North East of England by a young graduate Engineer, in the early 1960’s.
The main items of manufacture comprised engineers’ rules, engineering callipers, scribes (the initial product range, which supplied the local engineering industry) and then expanding to include micrometers and a limited range of specialist items which required high quality materials and skills to produce accurate and long-lasting items.
Due to the decline of engineering in the North East of England and increased competition from globalization, TTC realised that, although the product range commanded great respect throughout the industry – from both customers and competitors, this course of business activity was untenable in the long term. An alternative, radical strategy had to be developed to ensure the survival of the business.
The TTC production plant was well equipped with a strong financial base, the workforce was loyal, and many of whom had begun their employment from school or university and worked their way up the corporate ladder.
The business has to evolve into a new, engineering-based entity. In 2018, an approach was made to TTC by a North-East Automotive supplier, for the design and manufacture of hand held precision equipment, initially for research and development work. The Automotive Board had acquired funding to develop new ‘power steering’ for vehicles and other pioneering techniques. In 2018, the Board signed a two-year contract with TTC to manufacture these cutting-edge products on a larger scale.
This new market will expanded rapidly over the next three years and TTC will receive worldwide recognition for its product range and company image. TTC now realises that the business must project itself to customers, suppliers and investors as a world class, 21st Century organisation with vision, energy and conscience.
As the newly appointed Director of Quality for the Talbot Engineering Tooling Company, you have been asked by the Management Board to prepare a 3000 word report to explain how you would introduce a companywide quality improvement strategy. This report must also include a response to the following questions.
- What is Quality and what are the key elements of ‘Total Quality’
- List and explain the requirements for the Implementation of Total Quality Management,
- What strategies would you use to establish a quality culture in TTC,
- Describe how you would use ISO 9000 as an entry into TQM.
