Packet tracer is a network simulation software by Cisco, used primarily for Cisco certification related Labs. Even though it does not 100% emulate hardware, but it provides very close simulation of cisco devices. Moreover, it provides a lot of end-device (e.g. PC, server, laptops with wifi interfaces, and a lot for telephony and IoT).
Thanks to its rich GUI, Packet tracer is pretty straight forward to use. For creating topologies, you just have to drop icons of required device (e.g. routers, switches, desktops, servers, smartphones, etc.) from the library. Then connect the devices using the required interfaces/link types (e.g. fastethernet, gigabitenternet, straight-through cable, cross-over cable, console cable, etc.)
Follow these steps below to install Packet tracer from Cisco Network Academy site.
1. Go to
2. Enroll into the course “Introduction to Packet Tracer”, (you will need to create an account, if you don’t have already).
3. Logon to your account (and the course).
4. Read “First Time in This Course”, and go Next (Packet Tracer download link is in the ‘Introduction’).
5. Download and install Packet Tracer (also referred to as PT interchangeably).
6. From the enrolled course (Introduction to Packet Tracer), study at least Chapter 1 and 2 to learn about the features and GUI of software.
