Nuclear energy over the past few years has been more recommended than any other source of power. The added advantage it has is because of less emission of greenhouse gases into the environment. However, if not handled properly it is extremely dangerous but on the other hand, the power is easily manageable. During some instances, radiation emissions have been recorded and hence concern has been raised due to its harm to both human and the environment at large.1
In order for us to clearly understand this type of power, we have no alternative rather than to look deeply at it pros and cons. The pros of the nuclear energy power are:
a. When using this form of energy, less carbon dioxide is emitted to the environment and hence it contributes to having a cleaner environment.
b. When comparing the source of power with other forms of energy, we get to find that it is relatively cheaper and readily available in the market.1
c. Since the power is generated in large amounts, with the dynamic changes in the modern world, individuals are able to expand their business as well as industries without no much complications. It has substituted other sources of energy such as solar which was been both locally and internationally.
d. The most important part is that the waste products can be recycled and reducing its operational costs. The recycling is done through reprocessing as done in Japan and EU.1
On the other hand, some of its cons are:
a. For a particular country to enjoy this type of power, it must be well equipped since the construction cost is relatively higher than other sources. Subsidiaries such as loan guarantees must be available.
b. The high loans which has to be borrowed leaves the country with huge burden to pay in future hence depleting its resources.
c. In case of any accident at the power station, the effects experienced go up to over two decades which has adverse health effects.2
d. The time taken to complete the construction site is longer than any other source setup. During the time of construction, the state involved could have engaged in other beneficial activities.
e. As we know, modern world is prone to terrorist’s attacks. Having such a setup comes out to be a major target for terrorists which results to huge losses.
f. It comes out to be a centralised source of power which has to be accompanied with good infrastructure, investment as well as waivers limiting the liability of their companies.2
g. The indigenous people who own such places that contain uranium do not support the mining of such as they consider it having environmental effects.
h. For mining to take place, there exists long term storage sites where the effects last for about 200-500 years.
i. Although there has been no cases of shipping terrorism, when the waste is been transported using ship do pose a threat to terrorism attack. This can result to severe losses altogether.2
Generally, there is no energy source that is perfect in it operation. Each and every source has its advantages and disadvantages. Scholars and industrialists should be more concerned on the merits that will enhance the global dynamic changes taking place. Nuclear energy comes out to be the most efficient and reliable source of power in modern world. This is due to less emissions of greenhouse gases into the environment.
