The term therapy may refer to a treatment that is used to heal or to relieve certain mental disorders through a psychological approach. Therapies are administered by a qualified and certified psychotherapist. When seeking a psychotherapist for a given condition, it is important to know the different therapy options available and the best-suited option for the given condition. Despite the fact that most therapies are effective, some approaches may be more appealing than others. Psychological therapists play an important role in the society by providing essential treatment for people with emotional, psychological, and mental health problems.
Psychological therapies may be classified into five categories depending on the issue that is being addressed. These categories are behavioral, psychodynamic, humanistic, arts, and couples therapy. Behavioral therapy is concerned with behaviors and cognition. Psychodynamic therapy is used to remedy the lack of mental perception with regards to relationship patterns gained during childhood (McLeod). Humanistic therapy deals with self-development. Arts therapy focuses on creativity (McLeod). Finally, the couples therapy is used to solve marital or relationship issues.
Therapies are carried out in different ways depending on the condition of the patient and the type of preferred therapy. For example, cognitive therapy is administered through dialogue and it helps in the management of mental issues by changing one’s behaviors and way of reasoning. Also, this approach relieves depression and anxiety though it can still treat other physical and mental problems. Psychology counseling is offered to people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobia, post-traumatic stress, panic attacks and problems arising from alcohol abuse, insomnia, and break up of marriages among many others (McLeod). Generally, therapies are preferred for people going through distressing situations that can cause long term mental issues.
For an individual to become a professional therapist, one has to undergo a licensing program. Normally, licenses are offered to persons who have a master’s degree in relevant fields and have passed one or more examinations. All states in America require a therapist to be licensed. However, the type of requirements and qualifications may vary from one state to another.
To sum up, therapies are used to treat a confluence of mental disorders by using a systematic approach to diagnose and offer the most suitable remedy to the patient. A rigorous and detailed process is used in the licensing of therapists by relevant authorities in order to ensure they operate professionally. Therefore, psychological therapists play an important role in the society by providing essential treatment for people with emotional, psychological, and mental health problems.
